Underlying relates various things to one thing. The verb to underlie means the underlying relation. The verb to be under means the underlying relation. The verb to be beneath means the underlying relation.
Instead of looking under a thing which is underlaid by something (called the lost object):
say "You find [the list of things which underlie the noun]!";
now every thing which underlies the noun is carried by the player;
now every thing which underlies the noun does not underlie the noun.
Talking to is an action applying to one visible thing. Understand "talk to [someone]" or “converse with [someone]” as talking to.

When play begins:
say "You are home."
The player is wearing a brown bandana. The description is "A patterned brown bandana made of silk."
Hallway is a room. "You are standing on a plush rug at the end of a hallway. Doors line the walls that stretch back to the north, where you came from. Immediately to the west lies a black door."
A pink metal key is an object. The description is "A small key made of pink metal. Though very worn, you can see remnants of a floral pattern spotting its surface."
The plush rug is a supporter in the Hallway. The description is "A plush pink rug, covered in a cartoonish strawberry pattern. The rug is slightly askew." The plush rug is scenery. A pink metal key underlies the plush rug.
The black door is west of the Hallway and east of the Entryway. The black door is a door. The description is "A smooth black door. The handle is small and metal, positioned slightly lower than waist level on the left side of the door. Directly under the handle is a small keyhole." The black door is scenery in the Hallway. The black door is lockable and locked. The pink metal key unlocks the black door.
Before going through the black door:
if the black door is closed and the black door is locked:
if the player carries a pink metal key:
say "(first unlocking the black door with the pink metal key, then opening the door)[paragraph break]";
now the black door is unlocked;
now the black door is open;

say "If only you could remember where you put the key..."
The description of Entryway is "Stepping into the apartment, you enter a slightly cluttered entryway. Immediately, your sight is flooded with a myriad of colors and textures-- rugs, shoes, posters. Various small objects are affixed to the walls. Two shoe racks line the entryway to the left and right. Continuing on to the west is the living room. Immediately to the south is a bathroom." Understand "shoes" as rack.
Entryway walls are scenery in the entryway. The description is "Your entryway walls. Most of the decor here is green and yellow. There is an eclectic mix of photographs, old class projects, vintage post cards, and little trinkets from various places."
Your shoe rack is scenery in the entryway. The description is "Your shoe rack. Perusing the tiers, you see a collection of mostly neutral colored boots and shoes, ranging from brown to gray to black. Nearly all of them are platforms."
Shelby's shoe rack is scenery in the entryway. The description is "Your roommate Shelby's shoe rack. Containing three tiers, you see a variety of new to worn shoes. The collection includes several pairs of brightly colored Doc Martens, Shelby's snow boots, and pairs of patterned Converse. Buddy's leash is kept here as well."
For writing a paragraph about Buddy's Leash: now Buddy's leash is mentioned.
Buddy's leash is in the entryway. The description is "A retractable leash attached to an orange harness. Shelby uses this to take Buddy on walks."
West of Entryway is The Living Room. The description of the living room is "Your living room. The ceilings are slightly higher than the average apartment, giving the space an open and inviting feel-- balancing out the chaotic amount of objects laying about the room. The couch, in the center of the space, is covered in crochet stuffed animals. Buddy is sound asleep here. [paragraph break]To the south, the walls are primarily windows, with a glass door placed in the center. Bedrooms lie to the north and southeast. A kitchen is on the west edge of the room. The television, behind you to the left as you walked in, is playing Adventure Time... Shelby must have left it on."
Buddy is scenery in the living room. The description is "Shelby's 12-year-old dog, Buddy. He's lhasa apso mixed with... something that you can't remember. He is a bit annoying but you love him regardless. He is gently snoring."
Instead of smelling Buddy:
end the story saying "His stench has killed you."
Instead of touching Buddy:
say "You reach out to pet Buddy lightly on the head. He's somehow both soft and scraggly all at once. He stirs gently in his sleep."
Living room walls are scenery in the living room. The description is "Similarly to the entryway, nearly every surface is covered in various posters, tapestries, and pieces of art."
West of The Living Room is The Kitchen. The description of the kitchen is "A small kitchen, decked out with strawberry-themed everything-- towels, rugs, salt shakers, mugs... there are too many to count. The countertops are littered with crumbs and small dishes. Numerous plants and empty bottles adorn the tops of the cabinets. A rice cooker bubbles quietly on the edge of the counter. The living room is back to the east."
The rice cooker is scenery in the kitchen. The description is "A TIGER brand rice cooker, decorated sparsely with small stickers of cats. It is probably the oldest thing in the kitchen. Shelby is probably making rice for her meal prep this week."
Instead of smelling the kitchen:
say "It smells faintly of paprika and freshly cooked rice."
Instead of listening to the kitchen:
say "You can hear the rice cooker babbling gently, as well as an episode of Adventure Time playing from the living room tv."
South of Entryway is Your bathroom. The description of Your bathroom is "A fair sized bathroom, covered almost excessively in orange and blue decor. To your left are a sink and a mirror. On the far side of the room is a bath tub. The entryway is back to the north."
The sink is scenery in your bathroom. The description is "It's a little dusty, with splatterings of hair dye from yesterday on the sides. You've been meaning to clean this up for a while."
North of the Living Room is Shelby's Room. The description of Shelby's room is "Shelby's room-- a veritable feast of color and texture, you could spend hours in here just looking at her collections. Figurines, books, movies, art supplies, etc. An unfinished crochet project is laying on her bed (You're pretty sure it's for your birthday. You try not to look too hard). Shelby's bathroom is to the East, where you can hear soft music. The living room is back to the south.".
East of Shelby's room is Shelby's Bathroom. The description of Shelby's bathroom is "The massive master bathroom, with 2 sinks, a shower, and a closet. Nearly every surface is covered in Shelby's memorabilia of favorite TV shows and movies. The countertop is litered with little trinkets. Taking up most of the space on the counter is her earring rack.
Shelby is standing by the far sink, putting on glitter-- the last step of her getting-ready routine. She is listening to the soundtrack to Over the Garden Wall."
Shelby is a woman in Shelby's Bathroom. Shelby is scenery in Shelby's bathroom. The description is "Shelby! Your treasured roommate and friend of many years. She dons a striped pink dress and is wearing strawberry earrings. She is currently applying pink glitter to her cheeks."
Understand "mug", "tea" and "mug of tea" as "[tea]".
Instead of talking to Shelby:
say "'Heyyyyyyy' she says. 'You're home so early! I'm excited for tonight.'"
Instead of asking Shelby about "[tea]":
say "'Oh! I made that for you as a little treat before dinner' she replies. "
Instead of giving Buddy's Leash to Shelby:
say "'Thanks, but I already walked him today. He should be good for a few hours, it was a long walk."
South of the Living Room is a glass door. The glass door is a door. The glass door is scenery.
South of Glass door is The Balcony. The Balcony is a room. The description is "A fairly large balcony. A pot of mums is on the floor, positioned between two medium tomato plants. A hammock chair sways gently in the breeze. Looking off to the south, you can see Open Harvest-- it's shortly after 5, and people are bustling in and out of the store. It is abolutely beautiful outside. You are fighting the urge to take a nap."
The hammock chair is scenery in the balcony. The description is "A gray hammock chair, lightly used. Shelby's friends got this for us as a housewarming present."
Instead of listening to the balcony:
say "You hear the faint sound of cars commuting up and down Capital Parkway."
Southeast of The Living Room is Your Room. The description of your room is "Walking in, you feel immediate relief. Your room is filled with familiar objects-- adorning the walls, covering your desk and shelves, lining the windowsills. It smells of the green tea incense you burned before class this morning."
Rule for writing a paragraph about the white mug:
say "There is a mug of tea sitting on your desk. You don't remember putting it there."
There is a white mug in your room. The white mug is an open container. tea is in the white mug. The tea is edible. The description of the white mug is "Your favorite mug. Your mom got it from you from the thrift store. Alongside an illustrated snake, it is covered in Chinese text you can't read, but you loosely understand it to be something about the year of the snake." The description of tea is "Lightly steaming, Shelby must have made it for you when you texted that you were on your way. Just from looking at the color, it appears to be some kind of black tea."
Instead of smelling the tea:
say "Upon smelling the tea, you recognize it immediately as the vanilla black tea from the cabinet. Your mouth starts to water."
Instead of drinking the tea:
end the story saying "Freaking delicious. It's time for a nap before dinner."
