Hawk Mountain Cont'd 22.15 KiB
[10/14
I'm still mostly working on building the map but think I'm close to creating the actual game elements. After the map is finished, my next step is giving the player a backpack to put things in and then to start creating all of the things they'll need. Then I have plans for actions and score keeping.
BTW, yes this is based on the real Hawk Mountain in Pennsylvania!]
"Hawk Mountain" by Noelle Pinneo
Use American dialect and the serial comma.
A thing can be distant or near. A thing is usually near.
Instead of doing anything other than examining to a distant thing:
say "[The noun] [are] too far to see properly." [add binocular conditional]
Direction-looking is an action applying to one visible thing and requiring light. Understand "look [direction]" as direction-looking. [add direction-looking in rooms later]
Carry out direction-looking:
say "Hawk Mountain is an exceptional area to hike. You see nothing but wonderfull nature in that direction."
A room has some text called the containing-name. The containing-name of a room is usually "". [use this later if I need player to see objects when looking toward part of the trail. ex - containing name is "lying on the path"; use with direction-looking]
[remember to add 'nowheres' to the map]
Volume 1 - Parking Area
[Regions can contain smaller regions (but they can't overlap) create smaller regions and rooms that go inside them before larger regions]
The Parking Lot is a room. "The gravel lot is surrounded by tall pines. Quite a few cars are parked here - you expect to encounter more than a few fellow hikers as you make your way to the scenic overlooks. The Visitor Center is on the east. To the northeast, a gravel path leads to the main trailhead."
[add instead rules for unused directions]
The Pines are scenery in the Parking Lot. The description is "Tall and green and wonderfully fragrant." Understand "pines" and "trees" as the Pines.
[add smelling trees or air]
[I wonder if after I've created regions I should make these scenery in Hawk Mountain because they'll be throughout all trails. Then add specific trees that I want player to see more details about at certain points.]
Exterior-Center is east of the Parking Lot. The description is "The Visitor Center is a simple wooden building. A sign in the window reads 'Maps, Snacks, and Souvenirs!' A wooden door painted green leads inside." Understand "visitor", "center", "wooden", and "building" as the Exterior-Center. The printed name of the Exterior-Center is "Outside the Visitor Center".
The Green Door is a door. The Green Door is scenery. The Green Door is east of Exterior-Center and west of Inside-Center. Understand "green" and "wooden" as the Green Door.
Instead of going east from Exterior-Center:
try going inside.
Inside from Exterior-Center is a room called Inside-Center. The description of Inside-Center is "Things to buy etc. etc.". [don't forget to change this] The printed name of Inside-Center is "Inside the Visitor Center".
[add things to buy inside visitor center - things player will need]
Instead of going west from Inside-Center:
try going outside.
The Gravel Path is a room. The Gravel Path is northeast of the Parking Lot and northeast of Exterior-Center. The description is "A short gravel path leads northeast to the main trailhead." [rewrite this so player knows to keep going ne - or maybe get rid of it]
[fix description to include signboard]
The Main Trailhead is a room. The Main Trailhead is northeast of the Gravel Path. The description is "At the end of the gravel path you reach a large sign marking the main trailhead. The path continues northeast."
part 1 - Signs + Reading
A Sign is a kind of thing. A sign has a text called info. The info of a sign is usually "".
A Sign is scenery.
Trail Guide is a sign. The info of Trail Guide is "[bold type]HAWK MOUNTAIN TRAIL GUIDE[paragraph break][bold type]SOUTH LOOKOUT[line break][roman type]Packed dirt and shale with a 17% vertical grade. Length is 175 yards. Closest overlook. No blazes.[paragraph break][bold type]LOOKOUT TRAIL - Moderate[line break][roman type]Packed earth turns to rocky path. Benches to rest. One stone staircase. Vertical rise 300 feet. North Lookout requires traversing over large boulders. Length is 1 mile (one way). Follow ORANGE blazes. Alternative route to North Lookout is the [bold type]Escarpment Trail [roman type]which requires rock scrambling.[paragraph break][bold type]RIVER OF ROCKS TRAIL - Difficult[line break][roman type]Steep, 600-foot vertical decent through mixed forest before trail becomes completely rocky. Always follow RED blazes and use numbered posts for reference. Several unmarked trails may cross, so remain vigilant. Packed earth turns to rocky path. Must carry food, water and all safe hiking equipment in a daypack. Length is 4 miles.[paragraph break][bold type]SKYLINE TRAIL - Most Difficult[line break][roman type]Drop/decent just below the North Lookout. Follow BLUE blazes.[paragraph break][bold type]Golden Eagle Trail - Most Difficult[line break][roman type]Difficult! This trail connects the Skyline Trail with the River of Rocks Trail following a very steep grade with a rise or descent of 800 feet. Only for the very experienced hiker. Must carry food, water and all safe hiking equipment in a daypack. Length is 2.1 miles from intersection of River of Rocks Trail across Skyline Trail and back to River of Rocks Trail. Follow YELLOW blazes.[paragraph break]".[add staircase to Lookout trail; boulders to north lookout; add blazes to all paths; add unmarked trail traps on RR] Understand "sign" and "guide" as Trail Guide.
Trail Loops is a sign. The info of Trail Loops is "[bold type]TRAIL LOOPS[roman type][paragraph break]Outer Loop[line break]River of Rocks around both bolder fields, Golden Eagle #3 to #2, Skyline Trail, Lookout Trail - 5.5 miles[paragraph break]River of Rocks Loop[line break]River of Rocks around first boulder field, Golden Eagle #7 to #1, Skyline, Lookout Trail - 4.5 miles[paragraph break]Inner Loop[line break]Lookout Trail, Escarpment, River of Rocks, Golden Eagle #6 to #1, Skyline, Lookout Trail - 3 miles[paragraph break]". Understand "sign" and "loops" as Trail Loops.
Trail Rules is a sign. The info of Trail Rules is "[bold type]TRAIL CONDITIONS AND RULES[paragraph break][roman type]No radios, bicycles, horses, drones, firearms, camping, fires, smoking, vaping, hammocks, alcoholic beverages, or machetes/axes permitted.[paragraph break]No pets except for trained service animals.[paragraph break]For your safety and to protect the Mountain's fragile ecology [bold type]ALWAYS REMAIN ON THE TRAIL[roman type].[paragraph break]Pack in, pack out all trash.[paragraph break][bold type]Hike at your own risk. Beware of loose or slippery rocks. Always wear sturdy shoes with gripping soles.[paragraph break]". Understand "sign" and "rules" as Trail Rules. [there's a bug where trying to read 'rules' switches rule tracing on] [add spacing or something to rules to make it look more like a list]
Understand the command "read" as something new.
Reading is an action applying to one thing and requiring light. Understand "read [something]" as reading.
Check reading:
if the noun is not a sign:
say "There's nothing to read on [the noun]." instead;
otherwise if the info of the noun is "":
say "[The noun] is blank." instead.
Carry out reading:
if the info of the noun is not "":
say "The sign reads:[paragraph break] [info of the noun]";
otherwise:
say "The sign is blank."
The Signboard is a scenery supporter in the Main Trailhead. The description is "The wood of the large signboard is faded and weathered. On the board are three signs: Trail Guide, Trail Loops, and Trail Rules." Trail Guide, Trail Loops, and Trail Rules are on the Signboard. Understand "board" as Signboard. [fix bug: read sign - there's nothing to read on signboard]
[add reading action with breakout text describing trails and trail rules]
